Automotive Security - High Tech
Changes
The security of the
ignition systems on automobiles has changed and improved so drastically in
the last few years, that you may not even need a key for your new car!
If you buy a new 2007 Corvette, for
example, you use your fingerprint to unlock the door which also activates
the ignition system, to start your engine you push a button on the dash. The
are also several high end European cars that use similar systems.
Transponder technology is evolving,
some manufacturers have begun using "roving transponder codes" that change
the signal each time you turn the ignition off.
Servicing automotive locks has for
many years been the responsibility of the professional locksmith, with the
advent of some of this new equipment that is beginning to change. Some
manufacturers are restricting the release of system information and the
equipment needed to service their systems and moving those abilities to
their own dealership service departments. This has for some vehicles, become very
expensive to replace a lost key, some as high as $900.00.
You can still find some professional
locksmith businesses who choose to service automotive locks, and they still
have access to the overwhelming majority of manufacturers information and
equipment, however with the dramatically increasing cost and complexity of
that equipment, prices for these services has gone up. These companies have
invested in much of this high tech equipment and the training needed to use
it.
Some automotive key blanks now
incorporate the remote switches in the head of the key. Consequently the
cost for even a duplicate key can be much higher than you might expect.
We have the expertise to service many of these
advanced systems, ask us first, if we cannot work on your system, we will
tell you who can. If we do have the tools and training for your particular
system your reward will be more reasonable cost, expert workmanship
and you won't have to leave your car at the dealership all day!
Of course with all of these advances
in security technology, it has become much more difficult for a thief to
steal your car.
Then there is the rule on unintended
consequences - car-jackings have increased!
